Workshop Descriptions

We are pleased to share some information about IR-4’s first ever Week of Workshops, Sept. 23-26 at the Delta Hotel (Marriott) in Hunt Valley, Maryland (just north of the Beltway around Baltimore). IR-4 is combining its traditional Food Use Workshop with Environmental (Ornamental) Horticulture priority setting at one venue in the same week. This change is driven by opportunities to maintain the traditional face-to-face workshop priority setting formats while reducing overall costs. We also believe that having the Week of Workshops could lead to some research program synergies.

The Week of Workshops starts Monday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 pm with a General Session, followed by brief industry presentations about their pest management technologies. IR-4 will host a reception that evening for all participants.

On Day 2 (Tuesday Sept. 24), the traditional Food Use Workshop will start promptly at 8:00 am. We will take a break after lunch for a 45 minute session with representatives of EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs leading an informal discussion on relevant topics. The Food Use priority setting would then continue to its completion by about 5:00 pm, followed by a second reception that evening.

Plans for Wednesday Sept. 25 include a half day priority setting session for Integrated Solutions (IS) in the morning, and IR-4 Strategic Planning in the afternoon. Starting at 8:00 am, IR-4 will be establishing priorities for our newest initiative, IS, that considers modern chemical pesticides and/or bio-based pesticides individually or in combination to address pest management voids in food crops. IS focus also addresses chemical pesticide residue mitigation, pest resistance management and facilitation of solutions for organic cropping systems.

Wednesday will also include a half-day p.m. session involving discussions on future directions for IR-4. IR-4’s current Strategic Plan, Vision 2020, concludes next year. IR-4 will use this session to solicit feedback that will establish IR-4’s macro priorities for the next five years. The day will conclude with the final IR-4 hosted mixer/reception.

The last day of the Week of Workshops (Thursday, Sept. 26) will focus on establishment of priorities for the Environmental Horticulture Program. The Workshop starts at 8:00 am and is scheduled to conclude on/about 6:00 pm.

Further information regarding the food program and IS on-line project nomination processes, the Environmental Horticulture survey, and the Strategic planning session will follow in future communiques in the coming weeks.

In addition to the receptions, many meals and refreshment breaks will be provided including breakfast/lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  The registration fee is $250 for the Food Use Workshop and $250 for the Environmental Horticulture Workshop. A discounted rate of $400 will be offered if you want to register for both Workshops. Access to the General Session, Integrated Solutions and Strategic Planning is included in the registration for either the Food Use and/or Environmental Horticulture Workshops.
